Maro Beach / La Cala de Maro
Description
Although this beach isn’t as easily accessible from the towns centre as many of the other beaches in this guide it does deserve a special mention. La Cala de Maro is regarded as one of the best beaches in the province of Andalusia and indeed Spain itself due to its crystal clear waters and location right next to the natural park of Los Acantilados de Maro – Cerro Gordo. This is a quiet yet popular beach surrounded by cliffs, the natural park and agricultural land. The beach is made up of a coarse sand and has a small chiringuito (beach bar) but besides that no other shops or cafés. It’s covered by lifeguards, has the basic services you’d expect and you can also hire Kayaks here at a cost of €10 per hour.
How to get there
From the bus station found on the N340 you need to follow the road north from the roundabout passing the petrol station on the left. Go straight across the next couple of roundabouts and follow the road out of Nerja following signs for Maro. You will gradually leave the town and go through a more agricultural area reaching a large round about where you take the first right, continuing towards Maro. At the next roundabout you’ll be at the entrance to the village but you need to take the second right which looks like a motorway slip road but isn’t. Follow this road under a white foot bridge until you reach another small roundabout. Her you need to turn right again almost doubling back on yourself into the village but take the road which leads down hill, towards the coast. This road will lead you through farm land and eventually you’ll reach the parking area of La Cala de Maro.
