Rural Frigiliana
04 December 2016
FRIGILIANA has officially been chosen as one of the seven rural wonders of Spain.
In total 20 different municipalities were shortlisted for the honour, and the winners were decided on November 24 following a month of online voting. This is the fifth edition of the awards, which seek to bring increased visibility to Spain’s most breathtaking rural destinations. RURAL WONDER: Frigiliana finished third overall.
The awards ceremony took place in Madrid’s Florida Retiro building. A small delegation from Frigiliana was in attendance, including several councillors and Mayor Jose Antonio Gonzalez.
In total, 35,300 people voted in the contest, and Frigiliana managed to snag about 9 per cent of the votes, meaning that the town finished third overall, behind Tejeda in Gran Canaria and Setenil de las Bodegas in Cadiz. The other winners were Hervás (Cáceres), Sigüenza, (Guadalajara), Morella (Castellón) y Ochagavia (Navarra).
Gonzalez expressed his satisfaction pointing out the accomplishment will bring even more tourists to Frigiliana next year, as the town continues to cement its position as one of Axarquia’s secret weapons. In next year’s promotional calendar, the town’s logo will be redesigned to highlight its success and emphasise its standing as one of Spain’s new rural wonders.
